Opening its doors in 1940 as an engineering business,TV reception systems’ company, Matchmaster will this year celebrate it’s 74th anniversary.

Three quarters of a century on and an engineering offering has developed and evolved into Australia’s foremost supplier and manufacturer of digital TV antenna solutions.

Matchmaster began the design and manufacturing of TV reception systems and solutions in 1954, two years before Bruce Gyngell introduced a new medium to Australian households with the now famous words, “Good evening and welcome to television” in September 1956.

Fast forward to the present and Matchmaster are now leaders in the supply of domestic and commercial television reception equipment, system design, technical advice as well as consulting in the development and design of integrated solutions and the commissioning of projects according to Robert Waterford, Chief executive officer for Matchmaster.“We are definitely a full service provider to the digitalTV antenna market to the extent that we are even an accredited trainer. We see our role as to not only develop the technology and resulting products, but also to train and qualify contractors and installers to the highest levels.

Central to the company’s training offering are CERT3 government accredited trade certificate courses that Robert says, can add another string to the bow of any Electrical Contractor.“We’ve found that sparkies are rightly focused on quoting and working around their core competencies of electrical but at the same time, are potentially missing out opportunities in the MATV side of things for example.

MATV stands for Master Antenna Television and is the means by which many hotels, apartments and other multi dwelling buildings distribute TV signals to multiple receivers. It is essentially a network of specially designed cables and components that process and amplify signals and then distribute them from a singular central location.“MATV is generally left up to antenna installers”, says Robert,“but we think there is enormous upside for Electricians to train up and offer this skill as part of their overall business capabilities.

There may never be a better time for Electrical Contractors to obtain accreditation in the MATV space due to the impending Digital Restacking of frequencies.

In June 2010, the Federal Government announced that a digital dividend of 126 MHz of 694 to 820 MHz band spectrum, comprised of UHF television channels 52 to 69 will be realised. This digital dividend is made possible by the move to digital-only television broadcasting under the digital television switchover program. The final step to realising this digital dividend is for a significant number of digital television services to be moved to new channels so that channels 52 to 69 can be cleared and made available for new services such as new mobile broadband. This final part of the process is referred to as the ‘restack’ and involves changing the frequencies of nearly 1,500 national and commercial digital television channels across Australia at approximately 440 transmission sites. At each affected site, technicians will need to replace, retune or otherwise modify transmission equipment to enable channel changes to occur.

“Matchmaster, in conjunction with the Restack Program Branch Broadcasting Division are holding a series of seminars in relation to the re-stacking and what this means to Contractors and Installers”, says Robert. “In conjunction with these seminars, we will be demonstrating various new products that will assist Electricians in their venture into digital TV reception.”
